Rinpoche is organizing a recitation of the Chinese Buddhist Canon mainly because someone gifted him a set of the Longzang. He seems to have some understanding of the development of Chinese Buddhism. Today, devotees also offered him images of Xuanzang, Amoghavajra, Kumārajīva, and Phagpa. These are the small influences that have shaped his perspectives.
The Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayans traditions recited their respective canons essentially in the same space. In the Theravada and Mahayana tradition, the microphone was turned on and someone led the chanting, so there was occasional overlap in sound. The Mahayana tradition, however, recited silently, which I believe helped reduce interference between groups. It may also be because both the Theravada and Vajrayana traditions typically have a leader guiding the recitation. Later on, the opening verses and dedication prayers were chanted in rotation by each tradition.

My gratitude goes to the lay devotees who traveled with us. Their care and arrangements throughout the journey provided us with much convenience.

While the recitation of the Buddhist Canon was taking place, they also carried out a rice-and-grain donation for impoverished villagers nearby. It seems to be a multifaceted event—creating wholesome connections with the surrounding community while integrating their own activities, thereby fulfilling both self-benefit and the benefit of others.

More than two thousand years ago, we were originally Dharma brothers. I hope that after more than two thousand years, this can still be the case. Yet in reality, it is not so simple. Because the definitions of morality, concentration, and wisdom have changed across different traditions and cultures, their interpretations now differ as well. How do we maintain balance in such a situation? Ultimately, it depends on whether there is a genuine spirit of unity.
