The Meaning of Manifested Passing Away
• 众生若认为佛陀永远在身边，可能反而失去珍惜之心。
When beings assume that the Buddha will always be present, they may fail to cherish the Dharma.
• 佛陀示现灭度，使众生生起难遇、难闻、恭敬与追念之心。
The Buddha manifests passing away so that beings develop urgency, reverence, and appreciation for the rare
opportunity to encounter the Dharma.
• “灭度”在本品中具有教化与示现的意义，不只是对佛陀消失的描述。
In this chapter, “passing away” functions as a manifestation for teaching, rather than simply describing the
Buddha’s disappearance.
4. “良医治病”譬喻
The Parable of the Skilful Physician
父亲为了救治误服毒药的孩子，采用不同方法使他们愿意服药。譬喻说明，佛陀会根据众生的根器、时机与接受能力
，采用不同的教化方式。
A father uses different methods to persuade children who have taken poison to take the medicine that will
save them. The parable illustrates how the Buddha teaches according to beings’ capacities, circumstances,
and readiness.
5. 方便善巧（upaya）
Skilful Means (upaya)
• 方便是引导众生趋向解脱的善巧方法，不等同于最终究竟本身。
Skilful means are compassionate methods that guide beings toward liberation; they are not themselves the
final truth.
• 不同法门与修学方法，可以在不同阶段发挥引导作用。
Different practices and paths may serve a guiding function at different stages.
• 方便必须以善意、智慧、利益众生及不滥用为基础。
Skilful means must be grounded in compassion, wisdom, benefit to beings, and responsible use.
6. 不同佛陀观与学习态度

• 部分部派佛教传统较强调人间历史中的佛陀。
Some early Buddhist traditions place greater emphasis on the Buddha as a historical human figure.
