This route is likely the same one that great masters like Xuanzang traveled, crossing the Silk Road from Kashgar at the farthest edge of China, and then heading down to Gilgit from here. Along the way, they were accompanied by snow-capped mountains, with breathtaking yet desolate scenery and the constant risk of avalanches. Could it be that the teams of Xuanzang and Faxian met with disaster in this area?
You met Raul on the ancient Silk Road in Hunza, and he spent a year and a half cycling from Spain to this place, on his way to meet his companions in Gilgit. Wait, isn’t he like a modern-day Xuanzang?
Hunza Valley was central in the network of trading routes connecting Central Asia to the subcontinent. It also provided protection to Buddhist missionaries and monks visiting the subcontinent, and the region played a significant role in the transmission of Buddhism throughout Asia.
Before the arrival of Islam, the majority of the region practiced Buddhism. Since then, most of the population has converted to Islam, predominantly following the Ismaili sect.

Hunza, surrounded by six mountains towering over 7,000 meters, offers not only Buddhist scriptures and breathtaking scenery, but also a livable environment that must have provided great rejuvenation to Xuanzang and other great masters.-1
