An Introduction to Buddhism – Teaching, history and practice
An Introduction to Buddhism, by Master Happy in the coming October 2022, covers three main aspects: Buddhist Teachings, History of Buddhism, and Buddhist Practice.
The teachings of Buddhism begin with the background of life, nature and the role of the Buddha. Followed by, in this first part, the Buddhist teachings, which include two schools of thought, Theravada and Mahayana.
History of Buddhism, the second part of this course, embraces the early developments in Buddhism, the later history and spread of Buddhism. Early developments in Buddhism include the early Sangha, Abhidhamma, early schools and their doctrines. Moreover, the history and spread of Buddhism in India and Asia will be introduced.
Thirdly, Buddhist practice raises the knowledge of devotion, ethics, the Sangha, meditation and cultivation of experience-based wisdom. In this section, approaches of meditation such as samatha and vipassana, pure land visualizations, tantric visualizations and Zen meditation are the subjects to be brought out.
Through these three aspects of Buddhism, this course essentially gives an overview of understanding, practicing and realizing Dhamma.
